A few years ago, I started writing the first draft of a new novel, and I decided to record a short video before each writing session. I got the idea from John Steinbeck’s Journal of a Novel, where he shares his journal entries from the time when he was writing East of Eden. His journal entries have provided me with endless encouragement, and I wondered if maybe a video series could do the same.
I ended up recording 83 short videos . . . yes 83!!! They are each about the writing of the first draft, and are around two to three minutes in length. The links below take you to each of those videos. I’ve had quite a few people say these short clips are some of the most encouraging and helpful things I’ve ever created for writers: in some I talk about craft; in others, I offer some insight on the process of writing a book, or where I’m at in the process (mentally, emotionally, physically), or a simple word of encouragement to keep going.
I’ve included the first five videos here for everyone to take a look at. You’ll need to be a paying subscriber to have access to the rest. I hope this small glance into my process of writing a first draft is helpful and encouraging!
