Mr. Miyagi said, "Don't forget to breathe." We add, "Don't forget to have fun."

On having fun while we write, writing backstory as a way to get to know our characters (but not putting it in the manuscript itself), and continuing to explore the trajectory of my characters as they crash towards each other.
