I was fearing the worst whilst reading this and elated to find out your dog was found. Glad you got her back, and as for the fiction, sometimes not actively looking for it allows the idea to pop right back into your mind. Great read !
Oh I was so worried she might be gone forever🥺 I’m so happy your Winnie is home again. And as for your fiction writing…it’s coming again…you’re doing the pre-writing now, which of course is called, living. 😉 Don’t lose heart, friend. The shelves are plenty long enough for another Shawn Smucker book.
Relatable on many levels — the lost dog, my lost ability to journal, the disorientation that comes with a new and exciting change.
But I’m so glad Winnie is home. We thought we’d lost Samson five days after we moved — he bolted during a thunderstorm (they’re intense here) and by a miracle someone posted a picture of him in the community Facebook group. He was a mile and a half away (across a major highway).
Every finding feels like a miracle, doesn't it? So glad you found Winnie AND that important piece of paperwork. Given your talent with words, Shawn, I think your fiction story will find YOU when the time is right.
Your headline grabbed me for sure -- I feared for the worst, but hoped for the best! So glad (most of) the missing things were found...you'll get your fiction back, too. It's in your bones.
I think you'll get to the writing again. And when you do, you'll have so much to say on the things you've been reflecting on in the background. Sometimes we need to let our ideas simmer on the backburner for a long time to develop the stronger flavors that really feed our souls.
More likely though, like Winnie, the writing will find you and you'll find yourself writing again.
"this tiny undertaking of opening a bookstore" - Yea, right!
You'll find your fiction again Shawn. Know that's easy for me to say, but somehow having read your writing I believe you have much more in you to share and God will show you a way to get it out.

I’ll read the honest journaling of anyone who can write and knows how to tell a story. Excellent.

Why am I crying? Thank you for sharing.
Hi Shawn,
Thank you for sharing your powerful words.
In seasons when life tightens it's grip, I find that my capacity to write fiction disappears.
I can feel your joy at taking on the bookshop, and it must have its own share of challenges.
Your fiction writing will come back, like your loyal canine friend.
Take care,
Casey
Do keep looking! It's still there, probably in an old backpack, waiting for you to find it.

Oh, wow. You all must have been so worried!
It felt like a genuine miracle to see that post pop up! We had so many crying people in the house.
