We are here for less than fifteen minutes and already a handful of kids are running out the back door with fishing rods, and three teens are sprawled out on sofas, reading books. Somehow, another has already fallen asleep. All around us the kids are shouting and playing, and I can hear someone squeal and jump into the lake at the bottom of the hill. The youngest of us, a 3-year-old named Finley, giggles and runs from a cousin who is chasing her.

We have a family cabin too. My parents purchased it 11 years ago now and what used to be toddlers running around has turned into teens exploring without supervision. And yes, a few new souls who didn’t exist in its origin story. The way time evaporates what seemed like just yesterday is one of the most humbling parts of being human.
