Our lives are completely filled with detail, James Woods tells us in his book How Fiction Works, but filled with detail that we often barely notice. So why is detail so important in fiction? Well, first of all, detail is a tool the author can use to help the reader notice certain things. "Look!" the writer says. "This is important! Pay attention!"
