Remember my friend Mohammad, the man I wrote about in my book, Once We Were Strangers? Every so often I get an email from someone asking about him, how he and his family are doing.
About a week ago I got a text from him. We don't stay in touch as much as I’d like, now that he lives in Michigan. But his text put a grin on my face.
My friend, I am glad to tell you that I obtained American citizenship today.
I called him immediately, and it was good to hear his voice. He was thrilled to be an American, filled me in on his work, and sent me a picture of their youngest child, a girl. They finally had a girl! He was all smiles.
It’s strange, how seasons in life come and go. It doesn’t seem that long ago I was driving for Uber at night and swinging by Mohammad’s house for a strong cup of coffee, a few minutes of chatting. Or trying to help him find another place to live.
But now we’re in another season.
